Nick Virk (they/them) is a filmmaker, producer and writer.
I grew up in a Punjabi household in the West Midlands. I fell in love with the power of film through watching Bollywood films as a child. Hindi cinema has influenced my style and aesthetic and I retain an active interest in its development and accomplishments. Its unique cinematic language fuses with the culture I absorbed growing up in the west and this eclectic aesthetic can be seen in my work.
I have directed my first short film, Temple, about the queer South Asian experience and hope to create more meaningful film about my lived experience. My cinema and writing style is heavily skewed towards giving representation and platform to unheard voices. I am in the process of writing a book on anti-racist practice in the culture sector, due for publication in 2022.
Having worked as a producer of digital content for Tate galleries, I am able to make film for a variety of audiences in a range of styles. I currently work with cultural brands on creating film content that speaks to underrepresented audiences. I sit on the advisory board for the UK Asian Film Festival and have previously acted as trustee for Mosaic LGBT+ Young Persons Trust and as chair for Museum Detox.
